Medicaid home care starts with your needs
Virginia Medicaid can cover certain personal care and respite services for eligible members when the applicable requirements are met. The CCC Plus Waiver is one route for home and community-based support. A Medicaid card, a diagnosis, or help from a relative does not by itself approve these services.

What is a UAI or long-term care screening?
A UAI is the Uniform Assessment Instrument used in Virginia’s long-term care screening process. The screening team evaluates the person’s function, health needs, and support under the applicable criteria. An approved screening is different from a plan approving a particular service and schedule.

What are Activities of Daily Living?
Activities of Daily Living, or ADLs, include personal routines such as bathing, dressing, toileting, eating, and moving around. A screening considers how the person functions and what assistance is needed. Meal preparation, care-related household tasks, and medication reminders are related needs to discuss, but they are not all the same as basic ADLs.
Describe real assistance needs, including what the family is already doing. One checked box does not determine eligibility. The quiz below simply helps you prepare for a conversation.

What happens after the screening?
Ask for the result and clarify whether Medicaid eligibility is established and which service approvals are still needed. Once the required steps are complete, you can discuss a participating provider able to meet your needs. A provider must confirm service authorization, care planning, and availability before confirming a start.

Personal care, respite, and family caregivers
Personal care supports approved daily needs. Respite provides temporary relief for an unpaid primary caregiver and has separate criteria. A relative may qualify to provide authorized care in some circumstances, but the relationship, living arrangement, and caregiver requirements matter.
A to Z offers agency-directed services, with agency employment functions and nurse oversight. Consumer direction places employer responsibilities with the member or designated representative. Compare the care models and discuss which arrangement fits your situation.

Possibly, if the member and caregiver satisfy the applicable requirements. Payment, employment, and hours are not guaranteed.
