Can I get paid to take care of my mother?
The starting point is your mother’s eligibility and care needs, not how many years you have helped her. Clarify whether she has Virginia Medicaid, an approved long-term care screening, and authorized personal care. Then discuss whether you meet the requirements for the proposed caregiving arrangement.
You may already help with bathing, dressing, meals, or transfers. Explain the assistance she needs and what you currently do. Do not assume all time spent together would become paid work.
Can I get paid to take care of my father?
The same member and caregiver review applies when caring for your father. Being a son or daughter is not enough on its own, but it is a relationship to discuss when exploring a family caregiver option. Tell the agency if you live together, since shared residence may require additional documentation.
A paid role is connected to an approved plan and actual care delivered. It is not an allowance paid simply because a parent has a disability or receives Medicaid.
What would change if I worked through A to Z?
A to Z provides agency-directed care. You would need to complete applicable hiring, training, background-check, and documentation requirements before any paid assignment is confirmed. We discuss readiness for the actual care tasks, not just familiarity with your parent.
Ask about our free PCA classes if you need training. We also explain visit recording and the responsibilities that continue once care begins.
Start with what you know
Call with your parent’s location, health plan name, and screening or approval status if available. Tell us what help is needed and whether another provider is involved. You can call even if you do not have all the answers.
Read our paid family caregiver guide or use the care qualification quiz to prepare for the conversation.
Questions families ask
Does Medicaid pay me directly for being a child?
No automatic payment follows from the relationship. The applicable service and employment arrangement must be in place.
Is there a guaranteed wage or number of hours?
No. The authorized services and employment terms need individual review.
